What to Expect From Our Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Facility

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by persistent difficulties with emotional regulation, self-image, interpersonal relationships, and impulsive behavior. Because these symptoms often overlap with other mental health conditions, it can be difficult to identify and treat BPD without professional intervention.

At Steele Creek Wellness Center, we provide the depth of care you need to target BPD and address it at the root. In our inpatient program, you’ll live at our Jonesboro campus, which gives our clinical team the chance to see how your patterns show up and respond to them directly. Being on-site means the difficult moments are part of your therapy instead of something you process alone.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was developed specifically to treat borderline personality disorder, and it remains the most researched and widely used approach for the condition. DBT teaches four groups of skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Rather than asking you to eliminate intense emotions, it gives you concrete ways to experience them without acting on every urge they create.

At Steele Creek Wellness Center, DBT is woven through both individual sessions and skills-based group work, so you have repeated chances to practice a skill the same day you learn it.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often used alongside DBT to address specific thought patterns that reinforce BPD symptoms, such as all-or-nothing thinking about relationships or a tendency to assume the worst about how others see you. Where DBT focuses on regulating emotion in the moment, CBT gives you a way to examine and adjust the beliefs sitting underneath it.

Our clinical team determines how much CBT to incorporate into your plan based on what your assessment shows, rather than applying it as a default for every resident.

Medication Management

Medication isn’t a primary treatment for BPD the way it is for some other conditions, but it can still play a supporting role, particularly when symptoms like depression, anxiety, or mood instability are also present. If medication makes sense for you, our clinical team prescribes and monitors it daily, adjusting as needed and building a plan for managing it once you leave our facility.

Other Methods Used in Residential Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder

DBT and CBT sessions ask a lot of you, and the space between them matters just as much as the sessions themselves. Alongside your therapy schedule, your time at Steele Creek Wellness Center includes holistic techniques designed to help your nervous system settle outside of a clinical setting.

Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy delivers specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light through targeted panels to support a calmer mood. For residents whose emotions tend to escalate quickly, these sessions offer a passive way to come down from that intensity without needing to talk through anything.

Biosound Therapy

Biosound therapy pairs vibrational sound with guided imagery on a specialized table to ease physical tension. Because emotional dysregulation often shows up as tightness in the body before you can name what you’re feeling, biosound sessions give you a way to release that tension directly.

Sound Healing

Sound healing uses instruments like singing bowls and chimes to create an immersive, calming environment. It offers a low-pressure way to practice sitting with discomfort, a skill that carries directly into the distress tolerance work you’re doing in DBT.

Recreational Activities

Outdoor games and other recreational activities give you low-stakes chances to practice interpersonal skills in real time, whether that’s tolerating a disagreement during a game or simply spending time with other residents without it turning into conflict.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many who experience BPD also face additional mental health concerns that require clinical attention. The symptoms of BPD can overlap with those of other conditions, which is especially confusing when both conditions are present at the same time. Our clinical team screens for related conditions during your intake assessment, so your treatment plan addresses your complete clinical picture rather than a single diagnosis in isolation.

Persistent low mood and feelings of emptiness can occur alongside BPD, and the two can be difficult to tell apart without a careful assessment. We evaluate depressive symptoms directly and build them into your care plan rather than treating them as a byproduct of BPD.

Anxiety often intensifies the worries that are common in BPD, creating a cycle where worry fuels behaviors that put more strain on your mental wellbeing. We help you separate anxiety and BPD so each can be addressed on its own terms.

BPD and bipolar disorder are sometimes confused because both involve significant mood shifts, but the patterns behind them are different. Bipolar disorder involves distinct mood episodes that last days or weeks, while the mood shifts in BPD tend to be shorter and more closely tied to what’s happening around you. Getting this distinction right shapes which therapies and medications (if applicable) will help.

Alcohol or drugs are sometimes used to manage the intensity of emotions that come with BPD, which can develop into a co-occurring substance use disorder over time. When substance use is part of your history, we coordinate your therapy and medication plan to address both conditions together.

Whole-Person Care

Your plan at Steele Creek Wellness Center brings together evidence-based therapy, medication management when it’s appropriate, and holistic support into one coordinated approach, so your treatment addresses how BPD affects your emotions, your relationships, and your daily life together, rather than as separate problems.

For many people with BPD, emotions arrive quickly and intensely, and can be difficult to bring back down once they’ve started. Treatment focuses on building your ability to recognize what’s happening in the moment and use a skill before the emotion takes over completely.

Relationships affected by BPD can shift quickly between idealization and disappointment, often driven by a deep fear of being left. Residential treatment offers consistent opportunities to practice new skills alongside others working toward similar goals. Through structured group therapy, you’ll strengthen communication skills and learn practical techniques that can support relationship stability outside of treatment.

An unstable sense of self, including shifting goals, values, or self-image, is common with BPD and can make it hard to know what you actually want from your own life. Therapy works toward a steadier sense of identity that holds up outside of how others are responding to you in any given moment.

Impulsive or self-destructive behavior, including self-harm or suicidal thoughts, can be part of BPD for some individuals. If this is part of your experience, our clinical team builds a safety plan into your treatment from day one and provides around-the-clock support while you’re in our care.

Your Insurance May Cover Residential Treatment for BPD

Cost is a common reason people put off treatment for BPD, even when they know they need it. But many people don’t realize that their insurance actually covers residential mental health treatment.

Call our team, and we’ll verify your insurance benefits before you decide on anything. That way, you know what’s covered and can make an informed decision about your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Considering residential BPD treatment is an important decision, and it’s natural to have questions about what your care will involve. Reach out to our team with any questions you may have. We’re happy to help!

Rather than having one specific cause, BPD develops as the result of many complex factors. These factors could include genetics or trauma, especially for those who had a stressful childhood.

BPD can affect nearly every area of your life, and symptoms may vary from person to person. If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, you may benefit from residential care for BPD:

  • Intense mood swings that disrupt daily functioning
  • Frequent conflict or instability in personal relationships
  • Difficulty managing feelings of anger, sadness, or rejection
  • Impulsive behaviors that create ongoing consequences
  • Feelings of emptiness or uncertainty about your identity

Treatment focuses on helping you build practical skills that can be applied in everyday life. Depending on your needs, this may include emotional regulation techniques, distress tolerance strategies, healthy communication skills, mindfulness practices, and tools for developing more stable relationships.

At Steele Creek Wellness Center, we treat a variety of mental health conditions, including several types of personality disorders. In addition to BPD, we’re experienced in treating histrionic personality disorder (HPD), narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), and even mood or thought disorders that may co-occur with your condition.
